In its prime, Detroit turned out r&b as distinctive as that of any other soulful capitol and particular releases in more recent times prove that flame is not entirely snuffed out.  Joining latter-day gems such as Nathaniel Mayer’s final sets is Ms. Neals’ nice-and-nasty workout, a relentless dosing of garage-band grit and old-school soul-rock.  Her persona a well-proportioned mix of toughness and vulnerability, the robust-voiced Neals can match power and attitude with most any soul diva around.  Killer tracks include “Misery”, “Shame” and “Rather Go To Jail”.
