Whether one’s first impression of Jeff Plankenhorn is that of a monster slide guitarist or an equally formidable songsmith and powerhouse vocalist, the strong likelihood is that, upon even a brief listen, one of these will jump to the fore.  The Austin-based axeman’s searing, particularly expressive fretwork is highlighted all the more, framed in his fresh and varied blues-to-ballads-to-r&b originals, not to mention a kickass cover of the Sam and Dave gem “You Got Me Hummin’”.  Other tracks shouting for airplay include the gospel-tinged “Lose My Mind”, an enchanting ballad, “Vagabond Moonlight”, and an infectious, and decidedly Prince-like, “Born To Win”.  Ruthie Foster provides some killer vocal assistance and the overall production is top-notch.
