The Yule Log has jazz, pop and classical elements that make for a wonderful holiday experience that’s out of the ordinary. Pianist, composer, arranger George Burton is joined by other stellar musicians on violin, viola, cello, bass and drums. Nancy Harms is the featured singer on six tracks, and her smooth, buoyant vocals make for an enchanting experience in Burton’s highly arranged music. The band swings traditional tunes like “Fum, Fum Fum” and “The Holly and the Ivy” while “The Little Altar Boy” is a relaxed, imagistic ballad spanning seven minutes. Aryssa Leigh Burns sings “Jesu Parvule” with emotionally-charged feeling. Instrumental highlights include some innovative performances, with haunting harmonic twists and fluidity, in tunes like “We Three Kings,” “Christmas Waltz,” “Christmas Time is Here” and “Auld Lang Syne” that allow violinist Diane Monroe, violist Veronica Jurkiewicz and cellist Maura Dwyer to take center stage with the pianist, vocalist and rhythm section.

George Burton and friends take us on a seasonal journey with music that will warm the heart and soul like a hot toddy before a blazing yule fire. The Yule Log may not be your typical laid-back holiday fare but has an insightful, poignant heartfelt message presented with considerable creativity. The Yule Log has been carefully crafted, and it’s perfect for something new, refreshing and jazzy during the holiday season.  (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
