The case for “less is more” is made most persuasively by guitarist Fowler’s stripped-down trio format. Additional touches are sparse and occasional, leaving plenty of room for the leader, as often as not, to let his incisive licks linger out in space rather than feverishly fill every available hole. The fresh mix of mostly original blues, rockers and ballads and Fowler’s “mannish boy” vocals finish out a very satisfying roots set. “Thought I Had It All”, “Sounds Of Home” and “Old Fools, Bar Stools and Me” stand out, as does a low-key cover of Elvis Costello’s “Alison”.
