A neo-traditional old-timey Appalachian-style par excellence trio this is as real-deal as it gets. The principals – Aaron Jonah Lewis, Lindsay McCaw and Ben Belcher -- are multi-instrumentalists with fiddle, guitar and banjo in the arsenal.  The songs are mostly public domain and the level of mastery is apparent. These are not merely superb players, but they are students and fans of the music, as well. Opening with Rubber Dolly (“My mama told me if I was good that she would buy me a rubber dolly”) they set the pace for a spirited and high energy show. I Let The Stars Get In My Eyes, sung by McCaw, may be the only other familiar song on the set. Emotions reminds a bit of Dan Hicks. Flying Saucers is a humorous take on interstellar visitors. I Had But Fifty Cents is the most humorous song on the disc (“she said she wasn’t hungry, but boy that gal could eat…a dozen raw/a plate of slaw/a hamsteak and a roast/some apple sauce, asparagus, some soft shell crabs on toast…when she called for pie, I thought I’d die, cause I had but fifty cents”) and the essence of the collection is pure Americana. Exquisite pickin’ and singin’.
