About the Album

Nissim, Tamuz/George Nazos: Liquid Melodies

Jazz vocalist Tamuz Nissim was born in Tel Aviv, Israel now residing in NYC. Her debut album The Music Stays in a Dream was released in 2013. Liquid Melodies is her recently released sophomore effort where she teams with George Nazos on guitar. Making up the rest of the band are Willie Applewhite (trombone), Danny Weller (bass) and Ronen Itzik (drums).

This is a serene and mellow jazz album with the focus on the band playing as an ensemble. Sure there are solos here but this music is not a vehicle for showmanship and vain musical exploits. This is refined stuff, very subtle but with plenty of substance. Nissim proves to have a wonderful voice, very intimate and personal and just easy to listen to. Her scat vocals are also very good, prime examples being the first two tracks. On the album opening "Rainbows" the gentle guitar and vocals reveal a leisurely pace with Nazos' guitar work being particularly impressive. Nissim's scatting later in the track adds a classic element to her jazz style. On Charlie Parker's "Chasing the Bird", one of three covers, Nissim's rapid vocal lines intertwined with Applewhite's trombone is really cool leading into more scatting and some nice bass work. On "Isn't That Strange" Nazos' liquid guitar work is really quite sublime as is his gentle guitar phrasings on the serene title track. This is an album where the music doesn't jump out and dazzle you with excess but its subtle nuance and thoughtful approach to classic sounds with its own unique spin will have jazz fans suitably impressed. I know I'm a fan.
