Described by the artist as “A new release of old recordings by a nonexistent band” the debut CD entitled The Future Is Coming In From Outer Space, by the Boston-area artist known as Metalmoose, is a vital archival rediscovery in the world of 21st-century rock music. Spearheaded by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gregory Hall, the 14-song album features a load of amazing musical ideas and catchy eclectic rock and, there’s even a lyric sheet printed tucked into the CD wallet sleeve. The first influences I detected would be to some early Pink Floyd during their early psychedelic years with Syd Barrett played with a kind of late ‘70 punk-rock angst. Greg himself confesses his influences ranged from Randy Rhoads and Bob Mould divided by the skewed pop of Cheap Trick. As exciting and cerebral as those early sides with Syd and Floyd, as well as the offbeat pop-rock of Cheap Trick, the music on this Metalmoose collection was actually recorded way back in the mid-1990s. Asked 20+ years later about why his recording career was such a short-lived phenomenon, Greg explained to this writer, I'm limited in my playing time due to a neck injury in a car accident that messed-up my left arm. It was the reason I quit music and went to law school. Greg located the old tapes at the start of the 2020 pandemic and, at the behest of music label chief Seth Goodman of the band The Grand Undoing, the tapes were digitized and lo and behold were turned into a CD, much to the delight of music fans. There’s plenty of heavy punk-rock energy in the grooves of the 14-track album with the stars being Greg Hall’s vocals, guitar, and drumming infused with sheer rock energy of his original music. Although primarily featuring Greg’s vocals, electric guitars and drumming, there are plenty of sound effects littered throughout the album that enhances the sound and gives the music an almost unreal aura. A vital rediscovery and a welcome side-effect of the pandemic of 2020, The Future Is Coming In From Outer Space from Metalmoose makes for an impressive, archival collection from an artist that should have been bigger during his time. The tracks are featured on the Metal Moose Bandcamp page but thanks to Secret Candy Rock Records, they are joined together on this memorable collection.
