It’s quite likely impossible not to hear the spirit of John Prine in Rodney Rice’s work.  The plainspoken lyrics and vocals and the offhand wordplay found in the West Virginia-bred, Colorado-based singer/guitarist's masterful craft emanate the departed master’s inspiration; a consistent coloration sounding both unforced and undeniable.  Picking standouts isn’t easy from this first-rate set but “Ain’t Got A Dollar” and “Free At Last” are low hanging airplay fruit.  Potential “year’s best” candidates invariably show up in the final weeks and this is certainly one of those.
