A sure sign of a singer’s confidence is leading off with a slow ballad, and in the case of Ms. Crazy Horse’s current offering, the confidence is more than justified. The earthy power she delivers on the leadoff track, “California”, rebounds in each successive track of a soul-country cross-weave of high caliber and lots of personality. The DC-born vocalist is also a songsmith of no small skill, the afore-mentioned ballad is joined by potent roots-bound rockers- “Congo Square”, “Cowgirls” and more delicate fare- “Americana”, “Soul Yodel”. Production is ideal. This could easily end up one of 2014’s more special sets.
