One of the rising singer-songwriters on the current Spanish-speaking pop scene, Dariana López is sparking fresh interest in her music with the 2023 release of Por Eso Canto, released on the Nesso Music label. Born in Venezuela in 1994, and currently based in Paris, France, Ms. López is supported by a number of fine players including Manuel Sanchez (bass), Miguel Siso (guitars) and Francis Arnaud (drums), to name just a few.

Musically, the 9-track, 38-minute Por Eso Canto features a sparkling range of jazzy pop and even folkloristic Spanish and French language tracks, imbued with a touch of bossa nova, all bolstered by the sonorous vocals of Ms. López. The low-key nature of the music keeps the overall sound of Por Eso Canto very relaxed and meditative.

All the songs were written by Ms. López, with the exception of a pair of covers including a track called “La Javanaise”, penned by French music legend Serge Gainsbourg. One could compare Ms. López to English-speaking singers such as Joni Mitchell. That comparison might be a tad fanciful, yet there is something quite appealing about the languid nature of Por Eso Canto. After browsing her Facebook page, it’s also rewarding to note that apparently Dariana López is also clearly a big fan of the Beatles.
