Some serious pickin’ and grinnin’ from Cleveland’s Gage Brothers Band is just what the roots doctor ordered. Formed by Ben (harmonica, percussion, vocals) and Zach Gage (guitar, lead vocals) with Brendan O’Malley (mandolin) and Chris Volpe (banjo) sometime around 2014, this is their second recording. It’s a must have for fans of lush vocals harmonies and well-crafted song writing. The lead off song sets the tone. All You Are highlights their harmonies and banjo, especially. Zach sings, “I am jealous, of the time not spent with me/leave your life, for this misery/a failing love is bound to appear/ when I no longer hold my love near.” The songwriting is anything but cliché; it’s lyrically poetic. Where Can I Go? (“I'll turn my back like I always do/time and time before/ I'm scared of the old and scared of the new/The demons wait behind the door/Still I find I'm holding on to you/ You're the one I can't refuse/I stay locked in this room all alone/ Use the shadows to keep me warm/Maybe there's a reason it’s called the unknown/Without a purpose, without a form”) and Third Season (“Let's go up to the mountain top/ sing where no one can tell us to stop/ I need to get away for a while/ breathe the cool mountain air/ that blows away all our cares /leaves nothing but a smile”) are fine examples of the band’s lyricism. That lyricism translates to the music, as well as the words. All four are fine instrumentalists. Chris Volpe’s banjo is most prominent on some numbers, Zach’s guitar, Brendan’s delicious mandolin or Ben’s harmonica on others. And the harmonies are simply divine.
