The Blues is alive and well on the 2019 CD release of Kick Up Your Heels by Shelley King. Ms. King is in fine form on her ten track CD. Featuring key contributions by Shelley’s four piece band, highlighted by some blazing bluesy guitar work by Marvin Dykhuis, Kick Up Your Heels is somewhat of a star-studded affair also featuring guest spots by Delbert McClinton (harmonica, vocals), Marcia Ball (piano, vocals) as well as a wide range of musicians. The CD starts off ominously enough with a track written by Shelley called “Levon’s New Drum Set”, presumably about the late great vocalist of The Band, Levon Helm and, in keeping with the album’s venerable vibe there’s even a cover of a Helm original, co-written by Henry Glover, called “Blues So Bad”. All in all, Kick Up Your Heels is a very cool way to spend 34 minutes in blues-rock heaven.
