Over the years, guitar virtuoso Peppino D’Agostino has earned the praise of his contemporary guitar peers like Leo Kottke and Tommy Emmanuel. In the spirit of those two acoustic guitar heroes, Peppino’s forte is his mesmerizing guitar sound and compositions. Featuring ten instrumental guitar masterpieces, Peppino’s 2020 CD release of ConneXion combines a wealth of acoustic guitar sounds and styles - from classical and flamenco to Brazilian and New Age. Although it’s been a few years since Peppino’s 2014 album, Penumbra, the 2020 release of Connexion more than compensates. The cover art for Connexion may be humorous but the music is quite serious. Many of the tracks are solo acoustic guitar journeys, played with much expertise on steel string guitars, yet some tracks also feature contributions from electric guitar hero Stef Burns, who lights a kind of sonic fire under Peppino’s acoustic guitar sounds and, in doing so brings in a kind of rock like energy to several tracks on the album. The album also features Peppino’s track by track liner notes which also notes major influences such as Ennio Morricone and guitarist Paco DeLucia, as well as Peppino’s fondness for Doo-Wop music. There’s hardly a genre of music not explored here, making Connexion a highly entertaining album by acoustic guitar wizard Peppino D’Agostino.
