Based in New York City, Baklava Express is contemporary world music at its finest. Led by award-winning composer and oud player Josh Kaye, the band performs original music influenced by various traditions from Ashkenazi and Mizrahi folk music to the broader musical traditions of the Mediterranean. Eclectic influences and vast differences in the primary members’ musical backgrounds have created a distinct, bold style that emphasizes diversity and inclusion. Baklava Express’ debut album, Dávka, was released in 2023, and Sabába is their new 2026 offering.  Josh Kaye (oud/composition), Daisy Castro (violin, cello), James Robbins (bass) and Jeremy Smith (percussion) are joined by guests James Labrosse (guitar), Eren Erdogan (ney, kaval) and Lefteris Bournias  (clarinet).

Those familiar with the sweet Baklava dessert will know that it’s made from phyllo dough, chopped nuts, butter, and syrup flavored with honey, cinnamon, citrus or vanilla. With this ensemble, the core melodic ingredients create thin, delicate layers within their signature sound. A filling of nuts provides a crunch to the music.  Brushing the layers keep them moist, rich and cohesive. Spiced with other flavors, Baklava Express adds warmth and depth to their satisfying contents. Finally, the group enhances their overall energetic and rhythmic sound with sweetness, aroma and a subtle tang that emanates with the influences of Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, Armenian, Middle Eastern sounds, as well as discreet references to Arab, Mizrahi and Sephardi folk music, jazz, flamenco, or rock.

With its organic and joyous feeling, Sabába comes off as more spontaneous and relaxed than Baklava Express’ first album. They keep one foot in the past while vibrantly embracing the future of world music as they perform their original instrumental music informed by many traditions. Standout tracks like “Nistar,” “Adieu Henri,” “White Sauce, Hot Sauce,” "A Very Narrow Bridge," “Salt and Paprika,” and “Begin Again” invite you into the shared space, to contemplate meaning, existence, survival and exotic places.
