Respectful of the originals, guitarist Arlen Roth and boss 60’s/70’s bassist Jerry Jemmott serve up a set of soul classics, infusing them with present-day vitality and good vibes aplenty. Mr. Roth takes on the themes of gems including the Aretha Franklin hit “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone” and Martha and The Vandellas’ “Dancing In The Street” with multiple voicings adding fresh new angles to iconic fare. Joe Louis Walker joins in on the B.B. King hit “The Thrill Is Gone” for vocals and tasty extended lick trading with Mr. Roth. (Mr. Jemmott, btw, was bassist on the original as well.) Speaking of Mr. J., he assumes King Curtis’s role as our instructor in the preparation of “Memphis Soul Stew”. Good stuff.
