Guitarist Abbasi’s group’s acoustic takes on 70’s fusion classics come off as an inventive and engaging set overall and a fascinating track-by-track experience.  In recasting these originally electric gems, Abbasi consistently rides their melodic potential to fresh sounding regions. His fretless guitar work on Herbie Hancock’s “Butterfly” and Tony Williams’ “There Comes A Time” extract particularly exotic results.  He and his very kindred sounding solo partner, vibist Bill Ware, are both partial to fleet, graceful choruses.  Other tracks of note include the John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra haunting “Resolution” and Joe Zawinul’s Weather Report gem, “Black Market”.
