David Graff – Supposed To Fly
All songs written by David Graff (SOCAN)
I was an eighteen year old son of south Alberta
When I set out on the road to make my name
I made it ‘cross the line into Montana
I had big plans and, man, I thought I had game
It wasn’t long before I met this girl named Marcia
And that same night I brought her to my bed
When her brothers found us out it was all over
And I was beat till I heard angels in my head
Oh, but trouble finds the lowest ground
I was low and could not comprehend
The way that trouble loves a troubled mind
And mine was trouble even way back then
So I picked my pieces up and hit the highway
I stuck my thumb out like we did in those days
Gravity drew me to southern California
I thought heaven lived there in that golden haze
But trouble knows it’s way around
It came and found me out again
And after eighteen years in this troubled town
It feels like trouble is my only friend
I was supposed to fly up to the sun
I can hardly walk now and I sure can’t run
Far enough to leave this by and by
I was supposed to fly, I was supposed to fly
Well I’m not what anyone would call a young man
My disappointments they just add up year on year
If anybody cared to ask me I’d say I don’t understand
Why in hell it is God even put me here
I was supposed to fly up to the sun
I can hardly walk now and I sure can’t run
Far enough to leave this by and by
I was supposed to fly, I was supposed to fly
