Lyrics

When The Devil Grows Wings

Was raiding Old Man Price's garden
When I felt him grab my arm
I still see that evil look in his eyes
“Wanna be a thief?”, he said
“You’ll never be no angel kid
You’re dancing with the Devil here tonight”

He looked the part with his pitchfork and pointy head
Somehow, I wriggled free: As I ran off, I said

When I see angels in the flesh
Or even wise men bearing gifts
That’s when I’ll believe in all them things
And hey I may change my ways
When Hell freezes over one day
And the Devil grows wings

To a hungry kid from the neighbourhood
I's just doin' what I could
My poor Ma had four mouths to feed
She was under so much strain
She’d tell us sometimes angels came
To leave us food at night when we’re asleep

For the sake of the little ones, I just played along
But a voice in my heart played a different song

I woke one night to the rustling sounds from our front steps
A red-faced rascal leaving us food as we slept
For a moment we locked eyes; then Mr. Price took wing
Guess angels don’t just come in the shapes we think…cause

That night i saw one in the flesh
You know a wise man bearing gifts
Can make a kid believe in anything
You say you’ll never change your ways
Then Hell freezes over one day
And your Devil grows wings
