Steve Hill Album: Desert Trip Label: No Label Genre(s): Acoustic Blues Posted By: Duane Verh

Review
With a solid grip on acoustic blues underneath and a consistent show of song crafting flair, Steve Hill’s current offering commands well deserved attention throughout the set. The Montreal-based guitarist’s muscular, measured vocals match well with a string of originals and collaborations marked by compelling moods and meaty lyrics. All of this coexists with abundant displays of guitar prowess. The smart pop nature of “Cold Hearts” makes for a standout track as does the haunting atmosphere of “Judgement Day”.
The Hanson Family Album: Rhythm Rides Again Label: Self-Release Genre(s): Cowboy Western Posted By: Joe Ross

Review
The Hanson Family’s vision of the great American west includes gorgeous harmonies, lively yodels, and spirited lyrics as the three siblings sing of panoramic vistas, trail rides and sweet dreams under moonlit skies. Theresa (rhythm guitar), Lisa (fiddle) and Daniel (bass) have arranged a set of joyful songs to provide a celebratory tribute to cowgirls and cowboys everywhere. Their vocal blend is pleasantly sublime, never too flowery or sentimental, and the songs recall a bygone time when families gathered around the radio for their Saturday evening entertainment. Whether singing classic country with a jazzy twist (“Don’t Fence Me In”), toe-tapping western swing (“Sugar Moon”), or more contemporary numbers like “Swingtime Lullaby” and “God Bless the USA,” the Hanson Family gives us tightly-controlled music that allows its soul
Lyle Workman Album: Uncommon Measures Label: Blue Canoe Genre(s): Fusion Posted By: Joe Ross

Review
Five years in the making due to his other commitments as a composer for film and television, Uncommon Measures is Lyle Workman’s fourth solo project and one that allowed him to seek balance and personal fulfillment in his busy musical life. His previous solo albums date back to the 1990s and early 2000s. By collaborating with John Ashton Thomas for orchestrations, Workman’s goal was to take his music to a new level on Uncommon Measures. Pursuing a creative vision to write in a no-holds-barred fashion without constraints, Workman incorporates elements from multiple genres (classical, jazz, rock), and he’s produced a most satisfying, instrumental guitar-centric album with a competent, quality orchestra. The guitarist delivers energetic solos over complex changes, and the statements made have considerable character in pieces like “North Star,” “All The
Kari Kirkland Album: Wild Is the Wind Label: Slea Head Genre(s): Fusion Posted By: Robert Silverstein

A chance 1997 meeting in her native Canada between singer-songwriter Kari Kirkland and David Bowie was significant and true to life, Kari admits being greatly influenced by Bowie’s 1975 cover of the 1957 Dmitry Tiompkin song “Wild Is The Wind”, which Bowie covered on his Station To Station album. It was so influential in fact that Kari covered it and even named her 2021 album after it. For the 2021 CD release of Wild Is The Wind, Kari also features covers of well-known pop-rock classics originally by Tears For Fears and also the famous 1975 Steely Dan song “Do It Again”. Other covers of James Taylor and more gives the album a kind of jazz meets fusion meets cabaret vibe and Kari’s lush voice brings it all into focus. Speaking about Wild Is The Wind, Kari adds, “In my teens, I listened to a wide array of artists: XTC, The Pretenders, Prince, The

Review
The Los Angeles-based David Angel Jazz Ensemble’s Out on the Coast is a triple-CD set of music composed or arranged by David Angel, a highly respected musician who’s spent years writing and arranging for the television and film industry. Also an educator, he’s taught at conservatories in France and Switzerland. David Angel’s 13-piece band includes six saxophonists, some that also play clarinet, flute or piccolo. The band also has a couple trumpets (or flugel horns), French horn, trombone, and tuba (or bass trombone). The rhythm section has guitar, upright bass and drums.
Out on the Coast features 15 Angel originals and his arrangements of seven standards by Arthur Schwartz, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mandel, Jimmy Davis, Billy Strayhorn, Vernon Duke, and Harold Arlen. Nothing seems too rushed, and the ensemble’s instrumentation definitely
