The measured fire and ferocity of Mia Samone Davis’s vocals, in the service of a string of compelling lyric sets, anchors the listener in a succession of seductive environments further enhanced by leader/guitarist Paul Reed Smith and company’s suitable atmospherics. Standouts in a strong song list include “Sarah”, “Never Give Up On Livin’”, “Breathe” and “Ay, Doctor”.

A member of The Erik Dahl Ensemble, Anna Cochrane (violin / viola) is also part of the acclaimed acoustic World Music trio from Sweden known as Tzeitel. In this trio Anna teams with Sara Fridholm (accordion / vocals) and Christopher Andersson Bång (double bass). Performing together as the Swedish-based Tzeitel for over a decade, the trio furnishes their sound to great effect on the 2023 release of their 9-cut, 36 minute album. The resulting album, the group’s fourth to date, Drömfarden, can be best described as a modern-day, traditional sounding Swedish folk music with strong Klezmer influences.
Recorded between 2021 and 2023 in Sweden, Drömfarden features a mix of original music and covers of Traditional Nordic folk, while a number of tracks are imbued with an interesting Klezmer Music kind of effect. The album is well recorded and the album art with

As an overseas military brat growing up in Japan for twelve years in the 1950s and 60s, I often tuned into Japan’s TV musical shows and even sang along with the hits of the Peanuts, Blue Comets, Golden Cups and Village Singers. Our rock, blues and soul bands made up of American high school kids were also quite a novelty and managed to keep busy playing regularly at base teen clubs, parties, discos, restaurants and festivals. English is a compulsory subject through junior high school in Japan, and many Japanese students enjoyed practicing their English with me on our train rides home.
Japan’s love of all things western was quite apparent, and it’s certainly a pleasure to hear bi-lingual Japanese vocalist Masumi Ormandy cover some classics from the Great American Songbook. I never tire of popular songs like “Beyond the Sea,” “I Can’t Give You

The sweet sound of harmonious Americana Bluegrass is alive and well on the album of Fear Of Falling Stars, the 2023 release by Kristen Grainger & True North. Start to finish, the 10-track, 35 minute album marks yet another step forward by this long-favored Oregon-based band. Much like the 2020 release of Ghost Tattoo, 2023’s Fear Of Falling Stars percolates with a laid-back, sublime sound that makes it a good choice for modern day country-pop and bluegrass fans.
As on their earlier albums, Kristen gets top-notch support from the True North band featuring Dan Wetzel (lead and backing vocals, guitars, mandola, banjo, resonator guitar - all instruments Dan built himself), Martin Stevens (harmony vocals, fiddle, mandolin and octave mandolin) and Josh Adkins (harmony vocals, acoustic bass). What is, at its core, a classic blues band sound is transformed into a palette for tasty instrumental exploration in the hands of this talented foursome. Energy abounds on a tune stack that emits freshness track after track. Key to the proceedings are the hearty play of harmonica man Richard Rosenblatt and the multiple voicings of guitarist Paul Lenart.
