Grant Sabin and support crew cram a lot of good, earthy blues into a trio format. The Colorado-based slide guitarist enhances a convincing grasp of deep blues with vocals and touches of harmonica to match. Co-producers A.J. Fullerton and Forrest Raup serve as rhythm section with drummer Raup in particular contributing over-and-above excitement to the proceedings as evidenced by his double-shuffle play on “Baby Wanna Be Right”. The ballad “Luisa” is a strong airplay candidate as is the title track.

The sound of jazz is alive and well on Fun Size, the 2024 album by the NYC-based music group known as Ginetta’s Vendetta. The 13-track album is an excellent showcase for pocket trumpet player / vocalist and composer Ginetta M. (real name: Ginetta Minichiello) On Fun Size, Ginetta is backed up by fine players including Danny Walsh (sax), Belden Bullock (bass), Jon Davis (piano) and Marcello Pellitteri (drums), but the star here is the excellent Pocket Trumpet sound of Ginetta with her added vocals on several tracks also another strong selling point.
Ginetta’s 6th album as a bandleader, Fun Size features a mix of vocal and instrumental-based tracks with the album featuring a stellar selection of original tracks and rearrangements of classic standard including covers of “Black Orpheus”, “Moon River” and “Misty” to name just a few. Recorded

Guitarist Ronny Smith's "Struttin" is the type of album that goes into your player and remains for several days or weeks. It was just the ticket for my car stereo as I ran around doing errands and holiday shopping. Smith’s virtuosity emphasizes technique, precision and groove to showcase a style of highly-arranged smooth jazz with a retro vibe. His sonic artistry creates moods that clearly show the influences of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, George Benson and Earl Klugh in Smith’s own signature sound with deft improvisations and subtle phrasing.
“Struttin” is a 10-track CD that showcases eight of Smith’s originals plus two tracks (“Laura” and “Angel”) paying homage to Wes Montgomery and Johnny Mercer. While some of Smith’s expressive songs like “Get Up” and “In My Eyes” remind me of

Soon as the early 1970s unfolded, UK rock legends The Who seized the moment, not only with Who's Next but also with the debut solo Lp by John Entwistle, affectionately known as "The Ox". First released on the UK Track Records imprint in 1971, the album release of Smash Your Head Against The Wall was almost a rock blueprint for every song the Who released until Keith Moon’s untimely death in late 1978.
Speaking about plundering the John Entwistle songbook as well as producing and performing on the 17-track Sing Wistle Tunes, Think Like A Key Music label chief Roger Houdaille explains, “Entwistle has always been a musical hero of mine—not just as a bassist, but as a songwriter. I’ve always felt that, overshadowed by the mighty Townshend in The Who, his contributions to songwriting don’t get the recognition they deserve. This
California-based Chillingsworth Surfingham follows up their debut album with a 12-track, 2024 album of toe-tapping surf-rock style instrumentals entitled Mavericks. For the Mavericks album, group leader Chillingsworth Surfingham, (a/k/a John Ashfield) has penned 12 new tracks that takes the instro guitar rock genre back in time while carrying the band’s guitar brand into the future.
A musician that wears many hats, Ashfield is equally at home with his pop-rock band The Bobbleheads. On Mavericks, he’s assisted by a crack band including drummer Percy Surfingham from the band’s self-titled debut. With the 1960’s surf-rock sound back in style, the Mavericks album contains so much fretboard finesse that guitar instrumental fans of all persuasions will find much to applaud here.
