More of the same works just fine when drawing from the creative pen- and the phenomenal voice- of an artist such as Vaneese Thomas. This daughter of Memphis music royalty once again earns her own way onto a high tier in the soul universe with a short-but-sweet set list of varied, ear-grabbing co-writes, delivered reliably with the convincing feel and intensity of Ms. Thomas’s vocals. The simmering shuffle “When You Were My Man”, the old-school soul ballad “Wandering” and the moody, minor-keyed blues “The Last Thing On My Mind” are standouts on a set calculated to leave the listener wanting more.

La Sève is an interesting and unique Drôme, France-based quartet that draws their inspiration from West African music, particularly Cameroonian Bikutsi and Congolese Rumba. La Sève is comprised of guitarists Guillaume Cornuel, Gregory Brustier, Samuel Paris and drummer/percussionist Frédéric Jebejian. All four also contribute vocals.
La Sève’s new album Chlorophylle explores Ternary Form, and in particular Bikutsi, which was originally healing music sung by women. Ternary music, in 6/8 time, is fast, rhythmical dance music. While there are no women providing vocals on this project, it’s no wonder that La Sève is making appearances at many regional venues and music festivals throughout France. Their groove is intended to get the hips swaying and the feet stomping. La Sève means “the sap,” and they create an

The ten tracks on AySay’s new album KÖY have a very nice radio-friendly vibe with clarion sound and dynamics. The project follows AySay’s 2021 debut entitled Su Akar (“Water Flows”). Meaning “village” in Turkish, KÖY is a celebration of communities and their cohesion through language, family, gender, sexuality or lifestyles. AySay is a Danish/Kurdish/Turkish trio comprised of Luna Bülow Ersahin (baglama, violin, vocals), Aske Døssing Bendixen (drums, percussion, synth bass) and Carl West Hosbond (guitar, bass). For a bigger sound, guest musicians add zurna, sipsi, kaval, ogur sazi, trumpet, bass, synth and guitar to some tracks. Luna’s father came from a small Kurdish village in Corum, Turkey and emigrated to Denmark. The album serves as a tribute to a community that she misses and deeply longs for, and her multi-tracked
Chicago’s celebrated jazz label Southport Records is back in the limelight in 2024 with April & Joanie Sing! a 14-track, 55 minute CD release featuring Joanie Pallatto and fellow Chicagoan April Aloisio. Two gifted singer-songwriters, Joanie and April go back some 40+ years and April has released several albums of her own, including some for Joanie’s label Southport Records over the past 30 years.
With the album starting off with a near acapella cover of the 1966 Cream classic “I Feel Free”, featuring the shared vocals and harmonies of Joanie and April, April & Joanie Sing! is the perfect showcase for the duo’s fondness for musical collaboration and a shared affinity for great songwriting.
Following the Cream cover, April & Joanie Sing! goes on to spotlight unique covers of classics written by song-writing

Zac Harmon’s veteran presence is evident on all fronts on this very appealing, tuneful soul/blues mix. The Mississippi-bred, LA-based singer/guitarist/songwriter delivers the goods on a string of distinctive co-writes including old-school styled blues missives “Fake News”, “Big Dog” and “Stress”, a quirky funk track- “Glass Ceiling” and a classic soul take- “Let It Slide”. A respectable reading of Bobby Womack’s “That’s The Way I Feel About Cha”, partnering vocally with SueAnn Carwell is worth attention as well.
